about

This track is written for a past girlfriend who lived through spousal and child abuse. It is a monstrosity, and heartbreaking to witness. Even more devastating to live though. Empathy, help us do something more than just wait for the world to change.

lyrics

I know why you stay awake at night -
quietly listening for the sounds of a fight.
From the downstairs kitchen come the crashes of a brawl.
Mom lays bleeding on the floor, while dad stands proud and tall.
I can't believe you've got the gaul mom, to apologize
when the blood that's running down your face mixes with the tears born in your eyes.

I say leave
get up and go,
you're strong inside
you can make it on your own.

It's a good thing your mom wears make upor she would get a lot of stares.
At the bruise behind her sunglass and all the truth it bares.
About the pain and sorrow and the blood that shouldn't be on her hands.
And about her adult husband, who is far from a man.
But she'll just keep on hiding, waiting for the day
when some extenuating circumstance will explain it all away.

I say go,
this life is yours.
There's a world full of love for you
right outside your door.

I know your dad, he's got a lot to prove.
He thinks that sorrow doesn't float, so he drowns it in his booze.
The army made him strong, and he does the best he can,
but I feel like he's forgotten that the clothes don't make the man.
He told me "put your faith in Jesus, because his hand will save your life."
But it's a fallacy to think your soul is saved if you continue to beat your wife.

It's time now,
I'll walk with you.
Happiness awaits
we all know you've paid your dues.
